 ALBERT HERBERT MILLARD

J 56783

From  Stotford  Baldock, Hertfodshire

Albert was killed in action when HMS Surprise hit a mine in the North Sea.

One of the duties of the Harwich Force destroyers was the so-called "Beef Run", convoys to and from The Netherlands. Surprise was part of the escort of a Netherlands-bound convoy on 22 December, when the destroyer Valkyrie struck a mine and was badly damaged, having to be towed to Harwich by the destroyer Sylph. The remainder of the convoy reached the Hook of Holland safely, and the escort waited near the Maas Light Buoy for the return convoy. At about 02:00 hr on 23 December, Surprise, Torrent, Tornado and Radiant ran into a German minefield, with Torrent striking a German mine. Surprise and Tornado went to rescue Torrent's crew, but Torrent set off a second mine and quickly sank. While she was attempting to rescue survivors and recover her boats, Surprise struck a mine and sank

 Richard Jones

Royal Navy and Merchant Navy

Medals named to

A2920 R. Jones. R.N.R.

Richard was born 31st December 1889 at Beaumaris, Anglesey. He was a merchant seaman who enlisted into the Royal Navy Reserve in 1910. During WW1 he served in DAMS. He was also a problem seaman as noted on his service records. I have managed to read a few lines with these results.  He did temporally leave his ship on three occasions, Did break out of cells on two occasions, walked away from divine service and caught smuggling.  He would continue in the Merchant navy until 1946 when his services were no longer requires. During WW2 he was on the ship TEIRESIAS when sunk by German bombers. He would continue to miss ship sailing and was severely reprimanded for this offence in 1944 and dismissed the service in 1946.
