Born 8th May 1882, Bosham Sussex

Noted on the 1939 Census as a Yacht Seaman having been 2nd officer in 1930

These medals have never been worn and come with the medal boxes, 

these are in good condition considering their age.

Arthur Charles Byng

Master Mariner 

Born 19th April 1882, at Walworth, Surrey. 

The medals come with a compact disc with copy Master and Mate certificates.          Copy of church baptism record and  crew lists Arthur was on. 1939 census.                              Arthur did not go to sea after 1928.

SYDNEY VICTOR NEEDHAM

 

BORN Stockton 1897

 

Second Mate

Discharge number 969675


Sydney became an apprentice and his first ship, Lord Tredeger, was sunk by a German submarine in 1916 with Sydney on board. He survived the sinking but 4 other seamen did not.


The medals come with copy Mate certificate. Crew lists of a number of ships Sydney was on, WW1 medal roll, Copy CR 10 card with picture of Sydney. Details of sinking of Lord Tredegar.

Edward served on the Lady Gertrude Cochrane, a U.K. coaster                    owed by I.C.I. to transport Explosives around Britain.

Edward drowned at Milford Haven Docks in 1950

WILLIAM JOHN RIPPON JOHNSON

Chief Engineer with British-Indian Steam Navigation Co

Edward died of Double Pneumonia on the ship Sirsa, 19th October 1940

LAWRENCE SCOTT

Army Deserter 1917, Died by 1923

 

BORN during 1887 in Liverpool

Ellen Raymond married Laurence, a Mariner in 1910. On the 1911 census Lawrence a Fireman and Ellen are living with daughter Catherine and Ellen's mum. Lawrence still a Marine Fireman enlisted into the Royal Engineers August 1917 and deserted the army 6 weeks later, never to be found by the army due to returning to the sea. Lawrence is recorded as having died on the medal roll.

William served through World War One until discharged as Unfit for Sea Service on 14th March 1947
